The meaning of the word retarded has been changed by society over the years. Let's look at the definition from dictionary.com

re⋅tard
  /rɪˈtɑrd, for 1–3, 5; ˈritɑrd for 4/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [ri-tahrd, for 1–3, 5; ree-tahrd for 4] Show IPA
–verb (used with object)
1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.
–verb (used without object)
2. to be delayed.
–noun
3. a slowing down, diminution, or hindrance, as in a machine.
4. Slang: Disparaging.
a. a mentally retarded person.
b. a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way: a hopeless social retard.

By definition, the word retard or retarded is NOT offensive. It's all in how a person takes it. You decided to change the meaning of the word in your mind, thus making it offensive to you.

"retarded" fits the slang (b) definition well enough. The problem is when it is combined with "special olympics" ( a known competition for humans with learning disabilities) in the statement, it takes it out of the slang context, and that becomes offensive.

Okay, now lets look at the definition of slang..
slang
1  /slæŋ/ Show Spelled Pronunciation [slang] Show IPA
Use slang in a Sentence
–noun
1. very informal usage in vocabulary and idiom that is characteristically more metaphorical, playful, elliptical, vivid, and ephemeral than ordinary language, as Hit the road.

You see where I'm going with this?

I sure do. And to think that I was arguing with Daniel Webster. I have something to tell my grandkids!

Lets put down the dictionary and look at this another way.

If you had a child with Down's syndrome, would you still think Pandora was so entertaining?

I can't answer that with any truth because I don't know. I don't have a kid with downs so I can't tell you how I'd feel. I can say that no matter what, the meaning of the word retard or retarded is not offensive. The offense comes in how you interpret the word in your head.

I bet you wouldn't consider me retarded, although I am. I have disabilities that slow me down, hinder me from doing certain things.

I wouldn't consider you to be retarded.

Pandora is offensive due to the sum of the words, not their individual content by definition.

'Nuff said, and welcome to the forum.

Well since Im black I would get offended So dont assume because This is a internet forum that only white people have CPU's, internet, or can read. Look in a dictionary and tell me what retarded means then comeback and give us a good reason why you keep making a big deal about the word. Or better yet why you dont seem to get it? At this point its obvious that you just believe in whatever it is you want without any real facts! You could lookat it like thats a correct word to use since SLOW was the real point of my whole sig, just as well as we could look at it the way you do.

So I guess when your mechanic says he has to retard your timing to get your car to run right he is being offensive to you the mentally chalanged, and the car.

b. a person who is stupid, obtuse, or ineffective in some way: a hopeless social retard
^^^ Any of us could call any of us this definition of retarded because we all have whatever point that the other doesnt seem to get, but thats is only as good as who is doing the interpreting of the situation. Which is the whole point Any thing in life good or bad really only depends on how you or some one else takes it at the end of the day. What good to me could be bad to some one else.

I dont have a child with downs but I do have a cousin with Cerebral pulsy and my girlfriends brother is "MENTALY CHALANGED" It doesnt offend me because its on how you take.

Im sorry the Sig bothers you so much but I dont mean or Intend any offence so if you or anybody else takes it that way then thats really on yall. But in the end Flame is right You should prolly turn of Sigs Cause the reality is this there are going to be ALOT WORSE SIGS than the one im using.

No hard feelings or nuffin. Sorry for the long post.
