Dear Sir,

I'm the proud owner of a 2009 Nissan Cube. I took delivery of the car in July. I'm guessing I was probably one of the first to own this car in Canada. In an attempt to enhance my Cube ownership experience, I've done the following modifications: Stillen Muffler and Stillen Cold Air Intake, Tanabe Coilover struts and shocks, Tanabe Strut tower brace, and RTX Igniters - 17" x 7" wheels with 215/45 Fusion HRi's.

I'm not sure if you read a recent Wheels article on the Cube that appeared in the Toronto Star. It was less than flattering: The ugly truth about the Nissan Cube | Wheels.ca

So I contacted Mr. Richardson and advised him that I had made some slight modifications to my Cube that might change his mind about the car. To my surprise, he emailed me back and told me that my offer "Looks too good to pass up! Where do you live, and what days are good for you?" Mr. Richardson and I are going to try to get together sometime over the next two weeks so he can 're-evaluate' the Cube.

Further to that above, Stillen - a major and very well known after market parts supplier - was impressed at my Cube-zeal and has featured my car on their website:

STILLEN Customer “QBING IT” on the Dyno : STILLEN and the video YouTube - Nissan Cube on the dyno...

However, the one last modification I would like to make is to swap out the factory Cube seats with something that is a little more sporting in nature. Unfortunately, the factory seats offer very little back or side bolstering support. I would even go so far to say that they aren't very good at all. As such, I have looked into after market seats, but with the factory seats having SRS airbags built into them, my searching has become considerably more complicated and expensive.

My question to you today is: Would you assist me with my project and perhaps consider exchanging my factory Cube seats with a pair of 2009 Sentra SE-R seats? I think the SE-R seats would be a perfect fit for the more sporting nature of my Nissan Cube and they would plug right into the factory airbag wiring harness without any difficulty. The only modification might be to the seat bracket base, which would be minimal.

I did look at purchasing the seats on my own, but at over $2000 CAN per seat, it's a bit cost prohibitive.

Any assistance you could provide with my project would be greatly appreciated.

Sincerely,

Chris ******

Oh well...

Dear Chris,

Thank you for your recent email addressed to Mark Grimm regarding your 2009Nissan Cube. Mr. Grimm has requested that I respond to your email on his behalf.

It is with great pleasure that we hear from consumers who are excited about our products and proud to own and operate them. It appears that you have gone to great lengths to turn this unique product into something even more distinctive than it was.

In regards to additional modifications with assistance from Nissan, we regrettably must inform you that as we do not recommend modifications to our vehicles, we do not actively participate in such projects. Although the 2009 Nissan Sentra SE-R seats would be close in compatibility, they were designed specifically for that model, and we would not recommend modifying them to be used in the cube.

Although we could not provide you with a more favourable response, we hope you will understand our position in this matter. We sincerely appreciate your email and wish to thank you for your continued interest in Nissan products and services.

Yours very truly,

Dawn Tuplin

The columnist that wrote that rather scathing review on the Cube in the Toronto Star is coming to 're-review' with my modded Cube.

Should be interesting. I'll keep you guys posted.

So, just out of pure frustration, I decided to get a bit innovative and modify the drivers seat in the Cube so it provides more bolster support on the seatback. Using an old Mustang GT seat, I made the bolsters more aggressive.

Unmodified passenger seat and modified drivers seat:

Can't tell too much that shot can you? I suppose that's good. I didn't want it looked like a back-yard butcher job. I'm gonna put the plastic side pieces back on tomorrow. I just wanted to try it out first to make sure it was good.

(see next post for results)

Now check these shots out...

Using my hand to show the depth of the bolster, you can really see the difference. And it makes a major difference when sitting in the car. Cornering is much better now. I actually stay in my own seat.

That is an awesome mod. I think I will do the same as I like hitting the corners hard as well. I hope the Toronto Star guy likes the car and puts up a favorable write-up for it. Don't forget to mention the forum! I love this place.

It really is an awesome mod. It's been almost a week and the seat feels great. However, I have a friend of mine who works for a wreckers looking for Sentra SE-R seats. I think they look great and will totally suit my car.

I've had some inquires about how to do the seat bolster modification to the Cube stock seats.

I'm hesitant to fully explain the process because there is an airbag in the seat and I certainly wouldn't want to be held at all responsible for someone screwing around with it and getting hurt.

The process is tedious and involves removal of the seat bolts, disconnecting the seatbelt harness, airbag harness, some plastic trim pieces, the arm support, and then various clips and rods to remove the seat back fabric.

If you're not really mechanically inclined, I wouldn't recommend it.
